Fri 2007/Dec/21

• Reached a nice milestone in the implementation I'm working on for my dissertation. The last weeks have been quite productive, and the results I'm getting are satisfactory.

  I need to work in a different feature now, but good thing is that I have written most of the infrastructure that I will probably need, so this should take only a few days. I expect to have finished coding by the first days of January, and then I'll resume writing the chapters of the dissertation that are left.

  My advisor is leaving to USA for the summer, so that means that I won't be able to defend my work till March. On one hand, it's bad, on the other hand, it leaves me enough time to write a good document and play a bit with the code.

  On what refers to my life as student in Curicó, it's definitively over. I'm moving out of Curicó some day during the next week, and will most likely spend the summer in Santiago, finishing my dissertation. Six years in this city have been too much for me, and I don't think I'll be missing anything besides the really few friends curicanos I made.

  Not sure of what will I be doing once I defend my dissertation, but finding a way to do postgraduate studies in Computer Science is one of the most tempting alternatives, though it could take a lot of time. Other interesting alternative is related to find a job close to the free software movement, but I have not thought too much about it. I still have some months to think about it, and I'm certainly very open to other possibilities.

  Of course, if you have any cool idea or work proposal, please feel invited to write me!

Mon 2007/Dec/10

• The Divididos concert in the Teatro Teletón was a total blast. They played incredible and showed why they are called aplanadora del rock. They are only three guys and sound like ten!

  Mollo did the usual tricks and when he started playing Hendrix's Voodoo Child, the audience kindly provided with a carrot, two trainers, and a toothbrush. Mollo stopped playing contemplating the accessories on the stage, and picked up the carrot and one of the trainers. Then he said the audience "It's divided tonight, eh? What would it be tonight? Carrot or trainers"?. Then he answered himself and chose to use the carrot as a pick for the opening solos of the song. The poor carrot was completely shredded in the first minute minute, and then came the usual playing with the teeth, and finally, the outro solo with the toothbrush. I think even the security staff was more focused on his playing than in taking care of the audience. At least during Voodoo Child.

  As I arrived relatively early to the venue, I got place in the first row, right in front of the stage. Once the show finished, Mollo approached the audience and gave out lots of his picks to the reachable people, so I got one! Not that I am a freak fan, but it's always great when one of the guitar players you admire the most shakes hands with you and gives you one of his picks. So, thank you Ricardo!

Wed 2007/Dec/05

• Bought today my ticket to see Divididos this saturday in Santiago. Wohoo!

  Unfortunately, no one of my friends is able to attend the concert, so I'll end up seeing la Aplanadora del Rocanroll on my own.

• I've been doing good progress in my dissertation. Not that I've caught up with all the time I lost during the semester, but I'm finally working at a constant rate and feeling productive. And it's been really funny.

• After the Congreso Austral in Puerto Montt, I visited shortly the Isla Grande de Chiloé. The island is wonderful and the people is really lovely. I only had time to visit Ancud, but I wish I had more time to visit the small villages around.
